# Thirty days on the breath, and what they look like

*Practice note · 20 September 2026*

Ānāpānasati puts concentration in place, and without concentration there is nothing to observe with. On a ten-day course the breath gets three days — three days of ten hours, in silence, with nothing else to do, which is close to thirty hours. At home, in fifteen-minute pieces, the same hours take a month. That is the whole argument; the rest is what the month looks like.

## Where the breath is watched

Attention rests where the breath is most clearly felt: the rim of the nostrils, or the small area between the nostrils and the upper lip. Not the belly. Both are taught, but a small target sharpens attention faster than a large one, and the belly is useful mainly to tell you whether the breath is long or short. If you feel nothing at the nostrils at first, that is normal — keep attention in the area and the sensitivity develops.

## Not counting, not controlling

The task is to recognise, not to count: is this breath long or short, coarse or subtle. Length follows the state of body and mind — it lengthens with calm, shortens with tiredness, agitation, fear or pain. Correct nothing. You are learning to read the breath, not to write it. This is what separates [ānāpānasati](https://vipassana.life/anapanasati/) from prāṇāyāma. One exception for a racing mind: a few deep breaths, or a pause of a couple of seconds, and then let it be natural again.

## Sensations: accept them, do not follow them

Warmth, tingling, numbness arrive whenever a body sits still. In these thirty days you do not work with them; attention stays on the breath. Observing sensation through the whole body is Vipassana proper, and it comes when there is a concentrated mind to observe with.

## The practical seat

A cushion, thinner and firmer than comfort would choose; a folded yoga mat does as well; a chair is fine. Earplugs if it is noisy. A cloth over the legs — I still use one — because it helps you stay still. Stomach half empty: an hour or two after a meal, or best of all up at four, before breakfast, with a little hot water. Change the front leg between sittings. Set the limit in advance and do not change posture before it.

## Thoughts

Thoughts come. Accept them, do not go into their detail, do not think them through, and go on watching the natural breath. Noticing that attention has wandered is not a failure of the practice; it is the practice.

## When you are ready for body work

You do not need a perfect mind to begin Part 3. What helps is staying with the breath for several minutes at a time, noticing wandering quickly, and feeling the breath at the nostrils without searching for it. If after thirty days that is still rare, repeat the breath work. Nothing is lost by it — the step most self-taught meditators skip is exactly this one, and skipping it is why their body-scanning stays shallow.

Part 2 — twenty-five days of Ānāpānasati — is in production. Until it opens, repeat [Part 1](https://vipassana.life/course/part-1-anapanasati-essentials/): a second pass establishes the habit the first one started.
